While local task forces continue to battle Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) in the state of Michigan, it has now spread up into the northwestern part of the lower peninsula as well as into Manistee County, and other southwest regions of the state. Surveys and treatments continue to be managed on both public and private property, however priorities on grant funding vary by region. The quarantine on eastern hemlocks has been expanded and is still in effect, which means if you see trimmed hemlock branches while out for a walk, do not move them (even if there is no detectable HWA). Moving branches with needles is illegal at this time, since it can spread HWA.

Invasive species on the watch list have been identified as posing an immediate or potential threat to Michigan’s economy, environment or human health. These species either have never been confirmed in the wild in Michigan or have a limited known distribution.
